Log 7 Dec 2008

A small band of walkers (& a dog) assembled at 7am in the car park in freezing weather.    Allan, Andy, Donald, Kevin, Laurence, Dave K & Radley.

One car was positioned at the start, Ardchullarie More and the other car was left in the car park opposite the hotel in Strathyre.

There was a few inches of snow underfoot but a reasonable pace was started through the forest in a NNE direction along Glen Ample.   Once a gap appeared in the forest to the W we crossed the burn & started up the forest edge to the ridge.

On the ridge, now in deep snow, we headed N over Creag a' Mhadaidh and then to the cold windy summit of Sgiath a' Chaise.

At this point Andy had realised his ice axe was missing & Allan had lost his car key (remote control).   Andy & I decided to return the way we came to try to find our belongings & the rest headed off to a mobile phone mast just NW of the summit.   They descended via a long zig-zag forest track and another TV repeater aerial to Strathyre.

Meanwhile Andy & I tried to retrace our steps finding Andy's ice axe near the forest but unfortunately due to the snow, no sign was found of my car key - that will probably set me back a few hundred  pounds.!

Dave collected Andy and me and we adjourned to a warm welcome in a surprisingly empty Strathyre Hotel bar.    Despite the log-fire we dragged ourselves away to return to Milngavie car park & my locked car.
Fortunately I had a spare key but it was locked inside the car.!   After locating a mechanical key at home I opened the door to the sound of the car alarm and a welcome silence when I activated the spare key.
