MAMORES – 25 May 2008

Laurence, Jim, Shirley, Ian (their guest), Craig, Koon, Billy, Derek, and Fraser met in Glen Nevis at 9.15.

Fraser and Derek set off in sunshine to climb STOB BAN; the other 7 headed along the gorge for the Ring of Steall. The wire rope was the first excitement of the day, fortunately no mishaps there – but Shirley had decided to walk across as there was so little water!

The first Munro, AN GEARANACH was a bit of a slog but we reached the summit by 12.30. The views were stunning in every direction .The Ben, the aręte and the Aonachs were in full view and stayed that way for the rest of the day. The Grey Corries glistened in the sun. There was a hard task master that day so off we went to the next Munro for 1.30 where we savoured lunch and 26 minutes sun bathing. We could see the whole route now, and had fabulous views as far as Mull and Jura.

Another pit stop on AM BODACH was very welcome, then on to the Devil’s Ridge. Billy tried Kamikaze; the rest of us still had some sense in our weary bodies so took the path, only to find that to be quite airy. The small slab at the end of the ridge was also quite tricky, but the 7 brave souls were able to make the last climb up to SGURR A’MHAIM.

It was a long and steep path back to the valley for the cars at 6pm – just over 8 hours for the day. Fraser and Derek arrived back a few minutes later having climbed MULLACH NAN COIREAN as well as Stob Ban. The descent into the forest was messy in the final phase, and signposting on the forest paths and roadways non existent. They were not complaining, but put the comment on record.

A welcome refreshment was had at a busy Bridge of Orchy (Clachaig was even busier!)

The company was good, the weather was great; views fabulous – a brilliant day out
