BEN VORLICH and STUC A’CHROIN - Sunday 22 November 2015

Nick Harrington (guest), Ian G, Steve Meldrum (new member), Andy Baker, Dave K, Bria (Dave's dog) and Drew met in Milngavie at 7am and drove to Loch Earn in Ian's and Dave's cars.   Light rain on the drive up but we arrived at our start point at Ardvorlich on the South side of the loch to glorious conditions.   Crisp autumnal day with clear blue skies and no wind, temperature all day never varied from around -1 C.   We set off at 08:30, following the clear track up Glen Vorlich.   Path from around 450m was covered in very slippy ice and fresh snow, we quickly realise that we would make much faster progress with our crampons on.  Reached the top at 11:00 4.5km.

Slight chilly breeze at top so we didn't hang about and headed down to the Bealach an Dubh Choirein.   Knee deep snow in parts, unfortunately Andy hurt his finger on the way down, it looked badly misshapen, turned out he had torn a ligament.  We climbed up to just below the rocky buttress.   Due to his injury Andy decided to head back down.   The rest of the group traversed round slightly into Coire Buidhe as getting Bria up over the snowy rocks may have been difficult.

We headed straight up to the rim of the Coire with a short snowy bank to climb up and over to reach the ridge.   Unfortunately Bria couldn't be seen and Dave spent some time and energy tracking her down.   After regrouping we headed to summit arriving at 13:15 and had a very pleasant lunch sitting in the sun out of the breeze admiring the wonderful views, 6.5km.

Descended via marked path (small cairn) in the centre of Coire Buidhe and traversed horizontally north across the hillside to reach the col at the head of Coire Buidhe, then continued down SE to rejoin track near the bottom of Glen Vorlich.   Arrived back at the car at 16:45 just as the light was completely failing.    12km walk for most of us.
Dave must have covered about 20km chasing Bria and keeping us amused.

Stopped at Lade Inn, Callander, for light refreshments, nice bar with welcoming open fire.   Great day in the hills (Andy's injury apart), fantastic weather and good company.
