MUIR COTTAGE 20th to 22nd June 2008

A successful week end enjoying the facilities at Muir again.

Donald and Jimmy drove up early on Friday and did the Cromdale hills, than driving down to Muir via Tomintoul.

Allan and Fraser set off early and made a round of An Socach via Sgor Mor, which gave an easy, undulating high level approach to the Munro. Kevin, Koon and Mervyn had set off later, but met the other two on the mountain, and accepted the advice to descend by the reverse of that route, rather than repeat the walk in the glen.

On Saturday Kevin set off early and cycled to beyond White Bridge, then walking over Beinn Bhrotain, Monadh Mor, and then down the glen. He arrive back early enough to light the fire, which was welcome, as although both days had been clear and sunny, it was quite cold with a northerly wind.

Dave K, Koon, Laurence, and Iain Wilson cycled to Derry Lodge, and took in Devil's point, Cairn Toul and Angel's Peak. DK and KM ascended by the NE ridge of the latter.

Jimmy, Donald, Mervyn, Craig, Fraser and Allan took advantage of being in the area, and drove out east to take in various peaks, including The Buck, Ladylea Hill, Lord Arthur's Seat, and the lofty Iron Age fort on Tap o Noth, complete with many hut platforms, extensive ramparts, and an inner enclosure with stone walls partially vitrified.

After heavy overnight rain, Sunday dawned very wet, and plans were somewhat curtailed. DI, JW, FG and AC again went east for a walk on the way home, and enjoyed the Graham peak of Pressendye, dry but with nil visibility. Kevin, Koon and Laurence decided on a short walk over Morrone at Braemar, anticipating an improvement in the weather. Kevin did not anticipate the low barrier on the car park, and roof rack, container and cycle crashed to the ground. Damage was thought to be minimal.

A more detailed account is in the log book. We have already applied for a week end in June 2010 at Muir.
