BEINN A’CHROIN - 13 JANUARY 2013

Fraser, Kevin, Dave, Billy, Philip and Ron set off from a snowy Milngavie car park at 8am with Kevin and Philip driving.   We also welcomed two prospective new members from Kirkintilloch Mountaineering Club; Eunice Coop and John Berry.  Eunice has completed the Munros twice and John has a dozen left to climb.

With snow on the ground and falling, and a low cloud base we set off at 9:50am from the car park lay-by on the A82 south of Crianlarich.   After walking under the railway and over the bridge over the River Falloch we followed the west bank of the river up a track for about 1km before it petered out into a boggy path (of sorts). At this point Fraser decided to walk on his own up the bealach for an hour or so before heading back to the car to await the return of the rest of the party.

The remainder continued up the corrie on the west bank of the River Falloch before crossing the river onto the north ridge.  Snow continued to fall for most of the day and after a strength sapping walk up through soft snow the summit was reached just after 13:00. Conditions were not conducive to hanging around so after a quick bite to eat we retraced our steps down a sometimes slippy descent reaching the cars at 16:10.  The opportunity was taken to introduce Ron to the delights of the Drover’s Inn at Inverarnan where refreshments were imbibed along with delicious Xmas cake baked by Fraser.

The walk also marked the end of an era.  After 18 years and approaching 200,000 miles Kevin is finally parting company with his Passat.  His next outing with the club will see him arrive at the car park in a Golf estate... as to whether the “coffin” will be on the roof remains to be seen!
